Have you ever been told a story so compelling that you just had to share it? That’s how I feel today. Having just returned from my father’s funeral, all I can think to do is share his legacy of leadership as both tribute and gift.
No matter where you are called to lead, and Dad believed we are all called to lead somewhere, may the lessons he gave me be yours to call upon in times of uncertainty or challenge.
1. Play all-in: Married to the love of his life for 53 years, Dad believed in – and lived – a committed life. A staunch believer in doing everything to the best of one’s ability, he had little tolerance for excuses or mediocrity. From his climb up the corporate ladder, to home repairs and wood working projects, Dad taught us to play all-in at everything we do.
2. Sleep well: A bit of a rebel, Dad believed the only person’s opinion that mattered was the one whose face stared back from the mirror. The litmus test at the end of each day was being able to sleep with the decisions he made. “You’ve got to sleep with the choices you make” he would say. Do the right thing…and sleep well.
3. Take action: The embodiment of a strong work ethic, Dad knew the value of dedication and persistence. No dream was too big if you were willing to make mistakes, learn from them, and keep moving. “You can do anything you set your mind to, if you’re willing to work for it.”
4. Lighten up: Dad loved a good joke. He loved making others laugh even more. From his professional life to his personal life, and with strangers along the way, Dad always had a joke to share. He knew that humor connected and lifted people; his light inspired many.
5. Be a champion: Throughout his career, Dad championed those around him. Long before diversity was celebrated in the workplace, my father advocated for women as leaders and established programs to promote anyone with a desire to learn and willingness to work hard. To lead is to serve.
